Perched on the cliffs between Boscombe and Christchurch, Southbourne is Bournemouth’s quiet achiever a genuinely village-feel suburb that locals guard as one of the coast’s best-kept secrets.
A relaxed clifftop beach
Southbourne Beach is the draw: a long, sandy stretch backed by low cliffs and reached by zig-zag paths and a cliff lift. It is calmer and more local than the beaches nearer the pier, with dog-friendly zones for much of the year perfect for an unhurried morning walk.
Grove Road and the high street
The village centres on Southbourne Grove, a leafy high street of independent cafés, bakeries, delis and boutiques. It has a slower, community pace: the kind of place where you settle in for brunch and stay for coffee.
Walks and views
The clifftop promenade offers some of the finest sea views in the area, looking out towards the Isle of Wight and the Needles. Head east and the sand runs all the way to Hengistbury Head, an ancient nature reserve guarding the mouth of Christchurch Harbour.
